What is HIA?
Basically, it’s a service project based on research. It asks us to find a need in the community and act to be the solution for it. This is a project meant to make a difference.
Keeping the officer team will bring more focus to chapter activities and create stronger connections among our events. Being involved in HIA will also make you more likely to win a distinguished officer award. Most of all, I want everyone to feel that the project is just as much ours as it is mine.

Theme question:
What is the effect of discrimination on the opportunities available to minority students?
Why is this an issue to care about?
It’s unfair that certain people have certain privileges while others aren’t allowed equal rights and opportunities. This is an issue that affects real people and it happens every day, even if it goes unnoticed by people who aren’t affected by discrimination. Having discrimination part of our culture creates a system of oppression that will lead to instability in our society.
Why does discrimination happen?
The biggest factor seems to be fear among groups – fear of people who are different and fear of what others assume because of those differences. It also seems to stem from a sense of superiority over another group. This is dangerous, because when someone in a position of power thinks this way, they can influence the public to accept discrimination as a norm. We also believe that social media plays a role in exaggerating instances of discrimination and fostering extreme opinions among polarized groups.
What can we do about discrimination?
It is our responsibility to stay informed and find the correct information. When we are not sure what is correct or do not understand, then we must ask the questions we need to help us know more. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves and others on the effects of discrimination on everyday life. It’s important to stand in solidarity with those who face discrimination and be part of their support system/create those support systems.
