- Peer/social group is a major factor of self esteem
- Child must demonstrate certain competencies to society to gain sense of accomplishment
- If children are encouraged and reinforced for their initiative, they begin to feel industrious and feel confident in their ability to achieve goals. If this initiative is not encouraged, if it is restricted by parents or teacher, then the child begins to feel inferior.
- It is important that the child has positive figures at this stage
- If child cannot achieve sense of competency, they will have sense of inferiority, doubting personal own abilities and therefore may not reach their potential
This is important to our HIA research because if kids are positively re-enforced that they're doing well in school, then that means they feel they are competent at what they do (for example, test taking skills). If students are constantly told they are not doing well, they feel inferior. They feel they cannot do well in school because they cannot sit still and take examinations, which what schools are so that kids are ready for the next level (middle school, high school, to college).
