Cognitive Development Chapter 8
-There are one stages of development for the area we are looking at:
-Middle Childhood (ages 6 to 12)
-Individual development is greatly influenced by attitudes, perceptions, and personality characteristics.
Growing up during the prenatal, Infancy and early childhood has a big impact on the Psychology of the infant
AKA Situational helps influence the Psychology.
CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE
-Starts at age 7, children become capable of true logical thought.
(They stop being selfless, they can reverse sequence of events, and can focus on a lot more variants.)
Logic thought is limited to concrete reality, they have trouble thinking of hypothetical situations or abstract ideas. for an example “friendship is when someone is playing with me.”
Table 9.4 Erik Erikson's Stages of development pg 380
Industry vs inferiority
Positive resolution
Through experiences with parents and with peers, child develops a sense of pride and competence in schoolwork and home and social activities.
Negative resolution
Negative experiences with parents or failure to “keep up” with peers that lead to pervasive feelings of inferiority and inadequacy.
How this affects inside the classroom?
Psycho-linguistics.
Pg 288
Bilingualism- ⅔’s of children is bilingual raised speaking two or more languages.
At one point in the united states was that raising kids to be bilingual was discouraged. Educators at the time believed that children would be confused and not learn either language properly.
New research has shown that being bilingual has many cognitive benefits, studies show that bilingual speakers better able to control situations. Bilinguals are also are better taking perspectives of others.
Also help prevents a Alzheimer's and cognitive decline in later age
Previous work has shown that bilingualism is associated with more effective controlled processing in children; the assumption is that the constant management of 2 competing languages enhances executive functions (E. Bialystok, 2001). The present research attempted to determine whether this bilingual advantage persists for adults and whether bilingualism attenuates the negative effects of aging on cognitive control in older adults. Three studies are reported that compared the performance of monolingual and bilingual middle-aged and older adults on the Simon task. Bilingualism was associated with smaller Simon effect costs for both age groups; bilingual participants also responded more rapidly to conditions that placed greater demands on working memory. In all cases the bilingual advantage was greater for older participants. It appears, therefore, that controlled processing is carried out more effectively by bilinguals and that bilingualism helps to offset age-related losses in certain executive processes. Role Models (importance?)
Observational learning is a way to learn self control. Looking at role models who behave in ways that will ultimately help them realize their long term goals will make it easier to realize yours.
Pg 223 “strategy 5”
Do academic enrollment help influence with role models?
Goal Setting(?)
Do externally imposed achievement goals influence what children learn from procedural instruction? Third- and 4th-grade children's goals were manipulated toward either learning or performance. All children were then taught a procedure for solving mathematical equivalence problems (e.g., a + b + c = a + _). Children who were given learning goals were initially more likely to gain conceptual knowledge from the procedural lesson than were children who were given performance goals. After a 2-week period, however, children who were given performance goals exhibited the same conceptual gains as children who were given learning goals. Both initially and after the 2-week period, children who were given either goal were more likely to extend their knowledge beyond the taught procedure than were children who were not given goals. External sources such as teachers and parents may have the potential to foster children's learning by shaping children's goals.
